Information/Write-up

Coming from Old and New France, or composed on the Prairies, these folk songs present a tableau of the joys, the sorrows, and the dreams of the Prairie Métis during their quest for autonomy between the Battle of Seven Oaks in 1816 and the Battle of Batoche in 1885.

Lucinda Clemens is a singer and musicologist from the Qu'Appelle Valley in Saskatchewan. She learned most of the songs directly from Gaspard Jeannotte, one of the last Metis folk singers. The first performances of the music on the record were given in Italy where Lucinda Clemens trained and is pursuing a concert career.
