Born in Toronto in 1914, Ruth Lowe was a pioneering Canadian songwriter and pianist best known for penning the iconic ballad “I’ll Never Smile Again.” Originally broadcast by Percy Faith on CBC Radio in 1939, the song gained global fame when Frank Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey recorded it in 1940—making it Sinatra’s first No. 1 hit and the very first No. 1 on Billboard’s modern chart.
Lowe also co-wrote “Put Your Dreams Away (For Another Day),” which became Sinatra’s long-time closing theme. After a successful early career performing in Canada and the U.S., Lowe retired from public performance in the 1940s but continued to compose. Her life inspired the 1990 musical Ruthie and the 2001 documentary I'll Never Smile Again: The Ruth Lowe Story.
Her work left a lasting impact on popular music, and “I’ll Never Smile Again” was posthumously inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
