Information/Write-up
The WGB is pleased to present it's first classic album of 1978 - Wonderful Grand Band. Recorded at Clode Sound Studio in Stephenville, fresh from the Root Seller TV Series, this is the sound and musicianship we came to know and love in the 80's in the sensationally successful TV show WGB.
This vintage recording of the WGB contains some of their signature hits including the fiddle tune favourites of Emile Benoit and Rufus Guinchard and the first appearance of Sonny's Dream and other Ron Hynes classics. It also features two of the founding members of the WGB, Bawnie Oulton and Bryan Hennessey, who were not on the later shows or records, and the inimitable fiddle of Kelly Russell who also left the group shortly after this recording.
Mostly traditional Newfoundland music featuring Newfoundland's finest songwriter Ron Hynes, Glenn Simmons who later formed THE FABLES, Kelly Russell (once a member of Figgy Duff and The Plankerdown Band), Sandy Morris on guitar, Bryan Hennessey, and Rocky Wiseman on drums. The Wonderful Grand Band became one of Newfoundland's most popular acts, combining traditional and original songs with fresh musical ideas. The band spent six years touring, producing its own television series and recorded two albums. (2 albums never released outside Newf., led by Ron Hynes, often worked with satirists who later became the Codco troupe).
The group had a short-lived eponymous television musical variety show on CBC, airing from between 1980 and 1983. The show starred Hynes, Morris, Perry, Simmons, Snyder, and Wiseman (later replaced by Stamp), as well as CODCO comedians Greg Malone and Tommy Sexton. The show combined original and traditional music with topical comedy sketches and satire, some of which was directed at the CBC itself.
