Information/Write-up
The inimitable Dal Richards has done it again. He has chosen a great selection of memorable dance tunes, given them to first-rate arrangers, taken his band into a recording studio and has come up with a super album of redefined big band swing.
For those of you who don’t know Dal, he is sort of an institution on the West Coast and, to some extent, across Canada. His dance orchestra has played most of the major hotels like the Westin Bayshore and the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver, the Banff Springs Hotel, the Panorama Roof of the Hotel Vancouver, beautiful old ballrooms like Jantzen Beach in Portland, Oregon, and also the opening Gala Ball for the magnificent, new Art Gallery in Vancouver.
During that time, he played thousands of coast-to-coast CBC radio broadcasts, along with many national and local television shows. These, along with countless personal appearances, have earned him the title of the musical host of the coast.
Also, he is entertainment coordinator for the B.C. Lions halftime shows at their home games in the awe-inspiring B.C. Place Stadium.
However, all the years of his successful career didn’t produce the impact that his recent hit album Swing Is In did. That is, it made him a stone age rock star—his term—and an overnight star after 35 years in the business—his description.
Whatever his status, he has more fans than ever, and they are glad whenever his band plays for listening or dancing.
Alex MacGillivary, the assistant editor of The Sun newspaper in Vancouver, said it best when he wrote:
“The town favorite, Dal Richards — the Dance Band King.”
