Information/Write-up
Released in 1959 on Rodeo Records, Mary Lou / No One Else is one of Ted Daigle’s earliest forays into rockabilly, marking a pivotal moment as he moved beyond his country roots and embraced the raw energy of early Canadian rock & roll. Backed by The Tremolos—Bathurst, NB’s first rock & roll band—Daigle delivered a hard-driving, rhythm-heavy performance, firmly establishing himself as one of Canada's first true rockabilly voices.
On "Mary Lou," Daigle tears through a high-energy rocker, complete with Gilbert Glazier’s twangy lead guitar and Léo Chiasson’s walking bassline, all propelled by Arthur Chiasson’s steady drum beat. The flipside, "No One Else," takes a more melodic, country-infused approach, showcasing Daigle’s smooth baritone and ability to blend rock & roll swagger with heartfelt delivery. With Raymond Picot on organ adding depth to the sound, the result is a single that perfectly captures the excitement of Canada’s emerging rockabilly scene.
This record would later gain cult status among collectors, as it foreshadowed Daigle’s full embrace of rockabilly on Teenage Time (1961). A rare and historic piece of Canadian music, Mary Lou / No One Else stands as an essential listen for fans of early rock & roll and rockabilly rarities.
