Information/Write-up

Terry Lee Kushner
August 11, 1961 – December 22, 2024, Calgary, Alberta

Terry Lee Kushner was a talented musician, vocalist, and entertainer who left an indelible mark on the Canadian music scene and beyond. Born on August 11, 1961, in Calgary, Alberta, she displayed an early passion for music, which led her to a diverse and dynamic career spanning multiple decades.

Early Life and Education
Terry attended Viscount Bennett High School in Calgary, graduating in 1979. During her time there, she was actively involved in the Drama Club, Musical Theater, and was a student of the Royal Conservatory Academy of Music. Even as a teenager, her talent and passion for the arts were evident, setting the stage for her lifelong dedication to music and performance.

Music Career in Canada
Terry became a fixture in Calgary’s vibrant music scene in the 1980s. She was known for her powerful vocals and stage presence, which earned her opportunities as a solo artist and a sought-after backup singer. She released the single “Say It Like You Mean It” under the independent Aurora label, contributing to Calgary’s growing recording industry.

In 1978, Terry released her only full-length album, “One Step”, which was produced by Doug Wong. The album saw her collaborating with renowned musician Gaye Delorme, and featured a mix of styles, including several tracks that ventured into disco territory. Alongside the album, Terry released half a dozen singles, further showcasing her versatility as a vocalist. Doug Wong was instrumental in promoting her career, representing multiple artists that year.

Terry's third single release in Canada, “You Sure Fooled Me”, was launched on Aurora Records following the success of “One Step” and “Easy Way Out”. The latter received heavy airplay across Western Canada and gained traction in other regions. Written by Tom Snow and Cynthia Weil, “You Sure Fooled Me” demonstrated Terry's growing musical influence.

In 1979, Terry released “Finally Rockin’”, a heavier rock single that marked a shift towards a more powerful and edgy sound. This release reinforced her ability to explore different musical styles and signaled her artistic evolution beyond her earlier disco and pop influences.

Terry also contributed as a vocalist to Touchdown, a Calgary-based melodic heavy metal band. She performed on their first album, “Don't Look Down”, which was released in 1984 on Harlequin Records (Germany, LP 25.001). The album showcased her ability to deliver powerful vocals within the heavy metal and hard rock genres, further solidifying her versatility as a performer. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, Terry dedicated herself to radio interviews, television appearances, and live performances in local cabarets and nightclubs. She was involved with the rock group Mantra, which was also recording original material at the time. She later formed her own group to support her live performances. By the fall of that year, she had started recording a second album, with a planned release before Christmas. This new project was anticipated to have a “rockier” sound compared to her debut, highlighting her evolving artistry.

Life at Sea: Cruise Entertainment Career
In 1996, Terry embarked on a new chapter, taking her talents to the high seas as part of a musical duo aboard luxury cruise lines. For eight years, she performed as part of the duo before transitioning to a solo act, where she became a headline entertainer.

Her natural charisma and leadership skills led to her promotion within Regent Seven Seas Cruises (formerly Radisson Seven Seas), where she served as a Social Director, Assistant Cruise Director, and eventually Cruise Director. Over the course of 12 years (1996-2008), she traveled the world multiple times, bringing joy to thousands of passengers with her performances and hospitality. She often recalled these years as some of the best of her life, filled with adventure and unforgettable experiences.

Later Years and Health Challenges
After retiring from cruise entertainment, Terry returned to Calgary, where she briefly worked with the Calgary Flames in their front office. However, in the last 15 years of her life, she faced significant health challenges. Despite battling serious illness, including pancreatic cancer, she remained resilient and optimistic, defying the odds in her recovery.

Terry’s love for animals remained a constant throughout her life. She was a passionate supporter of animal welfare causes, frequently donating to organizations dedicated to the health and well-being of animals. Her beloved cat, Avery, was a cherished companion.

Legacy and Passing
Terry Lee Kushner passed away on December 22, 2024, in Calgary, at the age of 63. She is survived by her mother, Marlene, her brother, Gordon (and wife Patti), her nephew, Brantley (and wife Daniella), and her niece, Katerina.

A celebration of life was held on January 16, 2025, at Eden Brook Funeral Home in Calgary. In her memory, her family requested donations to the Calgary Humane Society, honoring her lifelong dedication to the well-being of animals.

Terry’s career as a musician, performer, and entertainer brought joy to many. Her determination, resilience, and passion for music will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her and hearing her sing. Her journey serves as an inspiration to artists and dreamers alike, proving that music and love can carry us through even the most challenging times.
