EMILY QUATTRIN LAUNCHES NEW LABEL

A seventeen year old gal from Woodbridge is the first artist signed exclusively to the new ZSP label. Ralph Cruickshank, president of Berandoi Music Limited says Emily’s voice is the most appealing one he has auditioned since a demo tape he received from a 14 year old Oshawa girl named Shirley Eickhard while managing BMI Canada’s publishing division in 1969. “Emily’s sound is more cool like a flute clearas. Shirley’s could be compared to a violin.” Both however have one thing in common — a beautiful yet unique voice.

Emily also writes and performs her own songs. She has written about 100 so far but admits that only 20 or 25 are “any good”. Cruickshank has received many favorable comments from industry people in both her voice and material and was encouraged to record her himself.

Emily plays the guitar and piano. Her favorite artists include Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, David Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. In the summer of 1971 she toured Ontario with an Ontario government project called Summer Sounds ’71. This group performed frequently at Ontario Place under the capable direction of David Waidin and recorded an album live at the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa.

Emily has her Grade 8 piano and Grade two Theory and also has had guitar lessons. She will be attending Grade 12 at Woodbridge Highthis September.

Her mother’s faith in her daughter’s talent and potential brought her to the attention of Paul Zaza of Zaza Sound Productions in Toronto for a demo. Cruickshank, armed with Zaza’s demo proceeded to sound out the Canadian music industry. The interest in their product convinced Zaza and Cruickshank to launch their own label this month to be known as ZSP Records with an Emily Quattrin single — “Someone’s Gotta Make You Smile” backed with “Next Plane Back Home”. Negotiations are currently under way with George Strut of Quality Records to distribute the ZSP label nationwide. Other songs and artists in the lineup will be announced shortly. Emily will also be working on an album of her own songs this summer with Paul Zaza.

Paul Zaza’s recording studio, Zaza Sound Productions is one of the most exciting new 16 track studios in Toronto. Clients include Graham Townsend, Nimbus 9 Moe Koffman, Guido Basso, Bobby Edwards, the Turtles and Free Design from New York.

Zaza is a 21 year old whiz lad, son of Jack Zaza well-known in Toronto as a top studio musician. Paul already has an impressive record as a recording engineer, composer, arranger, producer and studio musician. Both Paul and his studio promise to be an important part of the Canadian music industry in the seventies. Paul and Ralph Cruickshank of Berandoi Music plan to concentrate on a few good songs and artists and offer them the complete package — personal management, publishing and recording.

The next few months should tell whether Emily, Paul and Ralph have what it takes.
