Information/Write-up
One of the most successful bands on the Canadian music scene in the latter half of the 1990s, Big Wreck, return with their highly anticipated third full-length album „Albatross’. Produced by Big Wreck‟s singer-guitarist Ian Thornley, alongside executive producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush) and Eric Ratz (Billy Talent, Cancer Bats), Albatross was released on March 6, 2012 through Anthem/Warner Music in Canada. The excitement surrounding the band‟s revival and new album has catapulted the lead single and title track to become the highest charting Canadian single at “All Rock”, Modern Rock and Alternative Radio Stations in the country.
Propelled to international success with their 2x Platinum award winning album „In Loving Memory Of…‟ which includes the smash radio hits “The Oaf”, “Blown Wide Open” and “That Song”, the first question after a long absence may be, „Why did you go away?‟. The simple answer on why Big Wreck is back is owed to a rekindling of the friendship of Ian Thornley and guitarist Brian Doherty, who didn‟t speak for years. “I just missed him,” says Ian, frankly. “I called him just to hang out, but of course knew the chemistry would be there.”
Doherty echoes the sentiment: “We got together and started doing the same things as when we first met, on a personal and musical level. It seemed to make complete sense.”
With Albatross, Big Wreck is back to doing things the way they did in the very beginning; writing and recording without any outside influence, and regardless of the tastes of the day. The result is 11 new well-crafted tracks filled with intriguing timbres and powerful vocal performances that won‟t disappoint the fans they earned in the early years, and is sure to inspire a new legion of Big Wreck fans.

The current swell of '90s CanCon reunions -- from the Headstones to the hinted reformation of I Mother Earth to Treble Charger -- continues with news that bluesy Ontario hard rockers Big Wreck have a new album on the way.
A press release confirms that the band will issue their third album, ominously titled Albatross, on March 6 through Anthem/Warner Music. It's their first record since 2001's The Pleasure and the Greed.
According to singer/guitarist Ian Thornley, who released two albums as Thornley after Big Wreck initially split, it was only natural to patch things up with guitarist Brian Doherty, with whom he didn't speak for years,
"I just missed him," said Thornley said in a statement. "I called him just to hang out, but of course knew the chemistry would be there."
Six-stringer Doherty backed up his bandmate's sentiments, adding, "We got together and started doing the same things as when we first met, on a personal and musical level. It seemed to make complete sense."
The 11-song outing was produced by Thornley, alongside executive producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Rush) and Eric Ratz (Billy Talent, Cancer Bats), and the outfit believe the disc has them getting back to the massive radio rock sound that propelled past hits "Blown Wide Open" and "That Song."
"I went for all the good stuff that's missing on rock records these days," Thornley explained of Albatross. "I wanted to avoid falling into the formulaic cookie-cutter trap. That's not going to interest me, so how can it interest the listener? I have to go with my gut, which means longer songs, intros, bridges and guitar solos which explore strange territories, more room for breathing and a different dynamic range or sonic palette altogether."

It can safely be said that Big Wreck of 2012 follows naturally from where their songbook left off a decade earlier. Returning to that place where like-minded musicians communicate is to return to the wellspring of inspiration and creativity. With Big Wreck, that translates into an outpouring of rock music that is direct from the subconscious heart, and lives in the interplay of controlled horsepower and unbridled virtuosity. Big Wreck remains faithful to the “Big Rock” playbook but isn’t necessarily interested in the “so big it will eat your children” flavours of today. “I went for all the good stuff that’s missing on rock records these days,” says Ian in describing the recording process. “I wanted to avoid falling into the formulaic cookie-cutter trap. That’s not going to interest me, so how can it interest the listener? I have to go with my gut, which means longer songs, intros, bridges and guitar solos which explore strange territories, more room for reathing and a different dynamic range or sonic palette altogether.”
