Information/Write-up
Random Axis began in Ottawa in 1988. Chuck Kerr, Ian McLeish and John Millest had worked together in the band R.P.M. which had also backed country singer James H. Robinson. But their main love was recording and they set up a studio. Some of their early demos were released on a limited-edition LP in 1976 called “McLeish, Petrie, Robinson & Friends: RPM’. Geoff Pinhey had worked previously with Chuck, Ian and James in the Eligh James Band. Mary Ellen Moore was from Toronto via Dartmouth and met Ian and Chuck there while working on the musical production of “Amazon Women”.
The band started recording in late 1988 and by the end of 1989 they had finished their one and only album. As one of first indie CD's ever released by a Canadian band, it did quite well. They received airplay across the country throughout 1990, most notably in Ottawa and Halifax. Many stations aired the Fleetwood Mac cover “Think About Me”, and one song, “The Strength To Fly”, even made it to #8 on a station in Comox, B.C. But Random Axis could not capitalize on the momentum as they had no management or publicist and no plans to play live. After the album had run its’ course, they began work on a second, but this was never completed. Mary Ellen left the band in 1993, moved back to Toronto and eventually co-founded the Choirgirlz (2003 -2010). Geoff died in 1996.
Regrouping in 1995, Chuck, Ian & John went on to release two further cds as a trio, M*K*M. Both the “Orchid Island” (2000) and “Cleaning The Cupboard” (2002) albums featured guest appearances by Geoff and Mary Ellen, and included songs that were originally recorded for the second Random Axis cd.
