Information/Write-up
Born in New Brunswick, Larry Mattson first gained national attention with his music after he moved to Ontario, settling first in Hamilton. While performing at various local events he was 'discovered' by famed Canadian singer/songwriter Dallas Harms, who brought him into The Mercey Brothers recording studio in Elmira, Ontario and recorded the album "Sweet Words" released on Grand Slam Records (#GS-2008) in 1978. The album featured 8 of Mattson's own compositions and two Dallas Harms songs, "Before You Leave Today" and "Cowboys Don't Get Lucky All The Time", an earlier hit record for Nashville's Gene Watson.
Larry Mattson's debut album yielded a number of nationally charted singles including "I've Been Wondering" (GS-2310) which reached #71 on the RPM charts in 1979, followed by "Queen Of The Ball" (GS-2338) which peaked at #44 on the charts in 1979. Among the songs on the album was "The Opry North Eastwind Band", Mattson's tribute song to the popular 'house band' that performed on the hit radio series "Opry North".
In 1982 Larry Mattson recorded his second album, "Worth Waiting For", which he co-produced with steel guitarist Al Brisco, and recorded at Altair Four Studios in Lanark, Ontario. The album featured 10 of Larry Mattson's original songs, with the first two singles released on the Altair Four label -- "Falling For You" b/w "Let Your Love Enfold Me" (#2816) and "Loving You" b/w " If You Want Me" (#2817). The "B"-sides of both singles featured songs that were not part of the album. After a six year interval, four more singles were pulled from the album in the late 1980's - early '90's, and released on Mattson's own Olov Records label, including "Candleight & Wine" b/w "Poor Hard Working Man" which earned a #53 spot on the RPM charts in 1988, and "I Lose Again" which peaked at #83 in 1989.
Larry Mattson also released a seasonal single in 1987 with his songs "The Spirit Of Christmas" b/w "Sing A Christmas Song", released on Olov Records (#4863).
After departing the recording scene Larry Mattson became owner/operator of his own country club in Burlington, Ontario; and spent time promoting the recording career of his daughter Laura, who billed herself Laura Mattsson (double "s") debuting with a 1991 CD album produced by Harry Hinde (Eileen "Shania" Twain, Ronnie Prophet, Silver & Degazio, etc,).
Larry Mattson was inducted into the New Brunswick Country Music Hall Of Fame in 2013.
