Insight

This is the second album by Jerry Jerry and his ever-changing Sons of Rhythm Orchestra. The previous album, Road Gore, featured Mike McDonald and Ed Dobek in supporting roles. The main JGW link on this album is Duke Bronfman, also known as Paul Paetz, who drummed for Jr Gone Wild circa Folk You. A less direct link comes through Blake Cheetah, who plays bass on this album and who was a member of pre Jr. Gone Wild band the Malibu Kens with Mike and Ed. Jerry still plays many of the songs from this fine album. Battle Hymn of the Apartment was rated #74 on Chart's Top 100 Canadian Albums of All Time reader poll in 1996. NOW PLAYING Jerry Jerry and the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra IN Battle Hymn of the Apartment STARRING Jerry Jerry: singer Paul Soulodre: guitar, vocals Blake Cheetah: bass George Wall: guitar, vocals Duke Bronfman: drums, vocals WITH SPECIAL GUEST STARS Lenny Pinkas: keyboards Patrick Leveson: saxophone Antonia Pigot: vocals Johanne Poirier: vocals Vivienne Deanne: vocals Produced by Steve Kravac Engineered by Gaetan Pilon Cover by Roszay Back cover photo by Steve Kravac Recorded at Studio Victor St. Henri, Quebec Thanks to family and friends. As always, the best of luck to everyone who hires us. Runaway Lane A runaway lane is a steep off-ramp that stops great huge out-of-control trucks. They usually go straight up a mountain. Highways, trucking, touring, dummy dust, bridge parties. You never know when you might need one. Bad Luck at Tulane A big production number dealing with the point-shaving nastiness at Tulane University a few years back. Pushin’ for Jesus A Rock & Roll Religion standard for all the kids Free Love Could be a true story. No one knows for sure. She’s Been Used We mixed the twin blades (Paul & Cheetah) into submission on this R&B celebration of the milk of human kindness. Hurting Her (won’t make you a man) Hell of a fine piece of grand piano Lenny came in and whipped up in the middle of the night. The Mexican in Me Dedicated to Duke Snider The Hard Way Jerry thinks this is about Carlos Castaneda or something. Wrong again Brainiac-5. In the Hands of the Lord Turn around and be someone better, time permitting and shit. Wazoo A medieval rattle borne out of the fury of living under the tyrannical harp of a really bad comedian. Most of these words have never been used before. And rightly so. Mistaken Accidentally arranged by Duke and Blake (The Dummy Dept.). Hope we didn’t bury the political allusions too deeply in this one. Downhearted A get-well card to everybody, returned to sender. The Drift Well I was thinkin’ ‘bout politics when I woke up. Some realizations made me want to throw up. There’s a conflict of interest when you mention my name. I think we’re in trouble and you grub-stake my claim. You’re just a little kid when your pants are down. Totally enamoured by the big fat sound I hated that you wore the other day But at least I didn’t pay to see you that way. Your discipline is such, that control does not exist. And when you go into a skid, You’ll be sucked into the drift. Sittin’ in his office with a bitchin pair of shoes, got his income guaranteed he sings a minor key blues. Big stack of triplicates talking legalese, Loaded cup of coffee that he holds between his knees. Catchin’ mega-flak from his infra-red boss Both hands up means the mouth goes double shut. Altruistic theory is a terrorist action. They’ll be there to help you when they put you in a traction... Well I was lost in your kitchen in a blizzard at noon sayin’ something real important when you gave me a broom. Your lack of direction leads straight to perdition. A talent for denial is your sole ammunition Swingin’ on the free standing wang of progress you wanna eat burritos in the House of Congress taking other people’s money and you put it in your mouth while your consciousness grapples with the troubles in the south... So you wanna be the next James Dean or Metal want your feet out the window and your tongue on the pedal. You wanna be a primitive Rock’n’Roll Loser so you can be the one with a right to refuse her. Drinkin’ liquid blasters with your hands on the stove, sending crockin’ riffs to your home phone. You took a bunch of acid and you swallowed a Q-tip. Don’t even ask you why they call you Mr. Tulip. But your discipline is such... Jerry Jerry: lead vocals Paul Soulodre: guitar, vocals George Wall: guitar, vocals Blake Cheetah: bass Duke Bronfman: drums, vocals
