Information/Write-up
Released in 1959 on Rodeo Records, Young & Beautiful / Bitter Tears marks one of Ted Daigle’s earliest studio recordings, offering a glimpse into his evolving sound as he transitioned from country crooner to rockabilly pioneer. While Daigle would later gain recognition for his high-energy rock & roll recordings, this single finds him firmly rooted in country music, delivering a mix of smooth balladry and heartfelt storytelling.
On "Young & Beautiful", a cover of the Schroeder & Silver classic, Daigle showcases his deep, resonant vocals, backed by The Kidd Baker Band, a group of session musicians frequently used by Rodeo Records. Kidd Baker’s twangy lead guitar, Raymond Picot’s piano flourishes, and Leo Chiasson’s steady bassline provide a warm, traditional country arrangement, while Arthur Chiasson’s drums keep the rhythm gentle and understated.
The B-side, "Bitter Tears", is notable as one of Daigle’s first original compositions, demonstrating his growing confidence as a songwriter. The melancholic, narrative-driven lyrics pair beautifully with a slow, country shuffle, foreshadowing the storytelling approach that would later define his country career.
While this single leans more toward classic country than the rockabilly sound Daigle would later embrace, it serves as a key stepping stone in his musical evolution, capturing the moment before he fully stepped into the rock & roll spotlight. An important collector’s item for Canadian country fans, Young & Beautiful / Bitter Tears is a fascinating early chapter in the career of one of Canada’s most versatile artists.
