The Music of Nick Ayoub with The Nick Ayoub Jazz Quintet
Nick Ayoub, born of Lebanese parents in Trois-Rivières, Quebec on September 7th, 1926, moved to Montreal with his parents while still an infant. His first instrument was the clarinet, but he soon added tenor sax and flute; oboe, English horn and the like. He studied recorder, sax and oboe with Arthur Romano and at the Conservatoire de Montréal where he was awarded a 1st prize for saxophone. Further studies on oboe were undertaken with Harold Gomberg of the New York Philharmonic.
As a professional studio musician he has performed and written regularly over the years for radio and television and films, remaining all the while a strong aficionado — and with a sense of fun — for the music of jazz.
A member of Maynard Ferguson's Montreal band in the early days, Ayoub has played with the Johnny Holmes Orchestra, in the pit for stage shows in the Fifties, and in the 1950’s he frequently worked with trombonist Butch Watanabe.
Nick Ayoub Quintet has played the Jazz Festivals, receiving critical acclaim from musicians and public alike. An interest in teaching led to his appointment in 1970 as Professor of the Jazz Ensemble at the Conservatoire de Montréal.
