A Tribute to Canada’s Independent Female Voices of the Swingin’ Sixties
While the girl group boom of the 1960s is often associated with major American labels like Motown, Scepter, and Philles, Canada’s contribution was something different—smaller in scale, but no less passionate. Most of the all-female groups that emerged here did so outside the major label system, recording for tiny indies, private presses, and one-off singles distributed regionally. In retrospect, it was one of the earliest examples of a DIY movement in Canadian pop, driven by women whose talent often outshone the limited resources behind them.
Nowhere was this truer than in Quebec, where the yé-yé explosion gave rise to a dazzling array of Francophone girl groups. Acts like Les Beatlettes, Les Milady’s, and Les Intrigantes brought bold style and local flair to the global girl group sound—often recorded live off the floor in Montréal studios, or released on modest Québec labels with cult followings today.
Elsewhere in Canada, English-speaking girl groups were rarer, but equally groundbreaking. Toronto’s The Tiaras and The Chantettes, for example, left behind soulful sides now prized by collectors. She Trinity, perhaps the best known internationally, relocated to the U.K. and became one of the only Canadian all-girl groups to tour and record abroad.
This playlist gathers the rare and remarkable recordings left behind by these pioneering women—many of whom predated or operated entirely outside Canada’s still-emerging mainstream pop infrastructure. These songs stand as a testament to an under-recognized, highly independent wave of female creativity from Canada’s musical past.
