Biography:
Submitted by Ron Paley – March 2011
The Eternals were formed in 1961 by Ron Paley of Rosa MB along with his brother Ted Paley and two brothers from Steinbach, MB, John and Harry Hildebrand. Alex and Dave Turk of the Grange Hotel allowed the band to perform three nights a week in its lounge giving the band excellent stage experience and building of a tight sound. They then converted an old warehouse at the Paley residence in Rosa to a professional recording studio where they bought a professional 15 ips Ferrograph tape recorder to rehearse and tape their music for analysis and improvement. The studio and recording experience lead the group to specialize in tight musical and vocal arrangements with impressive harmonies eventually leading to their writing of original material.
They began live performances throughout rural Manitoba, using popular 580 CKY Radio DJ's Peter Jackson, Dennis Dino Corey, Daryl Burlingham, Mark Parr and J. Robert Woods as their evening dance promoters and hosts. The new dance hall in St Malo, MB was the starting point and a dance advertised extensively by Peter Jackson of CKY as the guest DJ drew a crowd of over 500 teens. This combination of the Eternals and CKY DJ’s resulted in packed dance venues wherever they toured throughout Manitoba, North Dakota and Northern Ontario. All along, the building of a very large rural fan base kept the Eternals on the road every weekend of the year. The CKY “On Air” promotions of the Eternals helped to introduce Winnipeg teens to the Eternal’s name and music.
In 1963 Bob Burns of CKY-TV Teen Dance fame became their manager and with Winnipeg’s Hungry “I” Agency they organized the first breakthrough in Winnipeg at The Pink Panther Discotheque. This was then followed up with appearances at the popular J's Discotheque, The Cellar, The Hungry I Club, River Heights CC, North End YMCA, Glenwood CC, West End CC and many other city high school venues. The band also formed promotional alliances with CKRC DJ’s Doc Steen, Boyd Kozak, Jim Paulson, Ron “Keg” Legge and Harry Taylor.
In 1965 the members of the band turn professional practicing and playing major local venues. They then left Winnipeg right in the middle of the Blizzard of March 1966 for life on the road. These performances took them to night clubs and one nighters throughout most of Ontario, northern Quebec and the northern United States. During this time on the road they recorded their first professional session at RCA Studios in Toronto with subsequent recordings at CKRC Studios in Winnipeg and Kay-Bank (United Artists) Studios in Minneapolis. It was this recording experience and love for the recording arts that prompted the band’s members to seek a career in the recording and sound industry.
In 1968, they returned to Winnipeg and opened “Century 21 Studios”, the first professional multi-track recording studio in the region. John Hildebrand became the recording engineer while Ron Paley supervised the technical installation and operations of the recording equipment. Harry Hildebrand worked on the creative writing of commercials and jingles while Ted Paley co-wrote, presented and sold the creations to radio and businesses throughout Canada and the USA. The studio started at 4 tracks and within five years had graduated to 8, 16 and 24 track recording equipment and new digital peripherals.
The new studios prompted the band to do more of their own musical recordings while they continued to play at local, regional dance and bar venues eventually adding Rick Pearson (Lead Singer and Guitarist) and Elyse Guyot (Singer) to the expand the band’s musical horizons. Bob Burns management provided the band numerous TV appearances on CKY-TV’s “Teen Dance Party”while Frank Wiener of the Hungry I Agency recognized the Eternals’ entertaining showmanship as a great way to open the bar scene in Winnipeg to professional bands. First to book the band was the Keevis Hotel Chain, at the Westminister, Westwood Inn, Maryland Hotel and later the Windsorian and St Vital Hotels became hot spots for Eternals performances. Bookings at each venue lasted four to six weeks long and sold out crowds at these bars were a common occurrence nightly.
In 1970, the popularity of the studio and the recording studio experience, prompted Ron Paley to start Oakwood Audio Labs to expand the company’s technical services and to arrange the supply of equipment to the recording and radio industry.
In 1974, the Eternals retired from live performances as the two businesses Century 21 and Oakwood Audio became very viable on their own. All 4 band members continued to record as session men and as creative jingle and song writers.
Through the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s John and Harry Hildbrand continued to run Century 21 Recording Studios while Ted and Ron Paley expanded Oakwood Audio into three divisions, Oakwood Broadcast, Oakwood Audio Hi-Fi and Oakwood Professional Sound Systems. In 1985 the brothers Paley and Hildebrand split the assets, the Hildebrand brothers keeping Century 21 Studios while the Paley brothers took ownership of Oakwood Audio.
In 1984, Ron Paley became the co-founder of MediaTouch Salem, New Hampshire. MediaTouch was the first touch screen based radio automation software designed by John Connell ( John was formerly with CBS Radio Boston) and Ron Paley. In 1990, Ron became president of MediaTouch USA and in 1994 with his brother Ted, purchased the world wide rights to the MediaTouch software and brought the product, its development and the client base support to Winnipeg. Ted and Ron then sold off the Hi Fi and Pro Sound businesses founding OMT Technologies Inc in 1995 (OMT – Oakwood MediaTouch).
In 1998, the Hildebrand’s retired the business operations of Century 21 Studios. The AC-DC road crew drove to Winnipeg and bought the Neve Consoles while a Credit Union bought the studio building. Harry Hildebrand founded a music delivery company that offered Point of Sale ads for commercial businesses while John Hildebrand became a free lance engineer to audio and video post production. John also worked closely with the Calgary Stampede organization as their front of house mixer engineer audio producer for the annual Grandstand Show.
The Paley’s took the Oakwood MediaTouch operations public in 2001 with OMT Technologies Inc and took management positions with the publicly traded Company, Ron as Senior Business Developer and Ted as the CFO. In 1993, Ron Paley’s spouse Carol Paley purchased the Oakwood Division from the OMT Public Company, made Oakwood Broadcast a private corporation, became its President and developed a successful ecommerce business www.oakwoodbroadcast.com for Canadian coast to coast distribution.
In 2004, Ted Paley retired from OMT and joined Ron Paley Broadcast as its Business Manager. Ron Paley Broadcast www.ronpaleybroadcast.com. was a consulting company & high tech broadcast equipment distributor that Ron Paley founded to service broadcasters with the latest IP based technology for radio.
Where are they in 2011:
In 2011, John and Harry Hildebrand live in Winnipeg and are still very active in the recording arts as free lance consultants and recording engineers.
