Biography:
Bidiniband is a Canadian rock group formed in 2007 by acclaimed musician and writer Dave Bidini, best known as a founding member of the legendary Rheostatics. With Bidiniband, Bidini brought his signature mix of literate storytelling, sharp wit, and love for Canadiana into a fresh, dynamic setting that bridges classic rock, folk, punk, and experimental elements.
The core lineup features Bidini on rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Don Kerr—also formerly of the Rheostatics—on drums, tenor guitar, and production duties, Paul Linklater (formerly of The Pinecones and Justice, Manitoba) on lead guitar, and Doug Friesen (also of Manitoba) on bass. Together, they craft music that is both musically adventurous and lyrically rich, reflecting Bidini’s multifaceted career as a musician, author, playwright, and filmmaker.
Bidiniband’s debut album, The Land is Wild (2009), established their sonic identity: catchy, unconventional rock songs dealing with subjects as diverse as dead hockey players, cannibalism, smoking nostalgia, and Canadian cultural politics. The album’s quirky storytelling and genre-hopping arrangements earned critical praise and cemented Bidiniband’s place in Canada’s storied indie rock landscape.
The group followed up with In the Rock Hall (2011) and The Motherland (2014), continuing to explore themes of identity, geography, and social commentary, always grounded in a love for music and the craft of song. Whether tackling political absurdities or heartfelt personal narratives, Bidiniband combines humour, heart, and a uniquely Canadian lens that has earned them a devoted following.
Known for their energetic and engaging live performances, Bidiniband extends the Rheostatics’ tradition of pushing artistic boundaries while remaining accessible and entertaining. Their music reflects a deep commitment to telling stories—about people, places, and the quirky edges of life in Canada and beyond.
