Origin: San Diego, California, USA - Vancouver, British Columbia, 🇨🇦
Biography:

Once labelled as "California's The Clash", The Dils were part of the very first wave of the L.A. punk scene. They formed in Carlsbad in San Diego County before moving first to San Francisco - where bassist Tony Kinman was briefly in The Avengers - then to L.A. In 1977 What? Records released their debut 7" "I Hate The Rich / You're Not Blank". Famously appeared in the Cheech & Chong movie "Up In Smoke". After a two year gap, Chip and Tony Kinman, who were the axis of the trio, returned with a three-sided EP, Made In Canada, which was a far more melodic affair, offering hints at their future as country-punk band Rank & File. They split up in 1980.

The Dils were an American punk rock band of the late 1970s, originally from Carlsbad, California, and fronted by brothers Chip Kinman and Tony Kinman. Soon after forming in 1977 the band relocated to San Francisco, where they would have a significant influence on that city's embryonic punk scene (bassist Tony Kinman would play very briefly with San Francisco punk band The Avengers during 1977), and then Los Angeles, becoming one of the major bands in the early Los Angeles punk scene too. They were known for their conspicuous radical left politics, and for a strong melodic sense that earned them the nickname "punk rock Everly Brothers." This classic is from their very last studio release, the three-sided double-7 EP, "Made In Canada" from 1979, at which point The Dils had moved to Canada and broke up in 1980. The Kinmans would continue to follow the roots rock direction in the cowpunk band Rank and File in the 1980s along with Alejandro Escovedo, and Cowboy Nation in the 1990s. Also known for classics such as "I Hate The Rich" and "Class War"(check out D.O.A.'s amazing cover of this), The Dils only released three singles. It's too bad. When they toured and hit NYC, Danny Fields was going to get them signed and John Cale was anxious to produce a full length album. "Red Rockers Rule!"
