Biography:

Julie Spence is the past President and pioneer of Spelling Bee of Canada. In 1987, Julie listened to the government of the day about the relationship that parents had with their children’s education. She was inspired to start a literacy movement that captures Spelling, Finances and Health to improve children’s self confidence, public speaking skills and their overall well being. Spelling Bee of Canada was born after a deep introspection as well as her fond memories of the Spelling Bee programme in her hometown of Lucea, Hanover in Jamaica.

Julie organized a team of volunteers around a shared vision of education and youth, thereafter they were on their way to Spelling Bee history. She recalls that she never lost focus of the fact that the program should bring families together. As a result, the Spelling Bee programme embraced the collective support of parents, guardians, teachers, Chapter Presidents, businesses, government agencies and volunteers within the community. Julie also wanted to make sure that the recurring theme of this program is that every child is a winner. Each child will be given a chance to acquire the skills of reading, writing and spelling and he/she will be recognized for his/her courage.

Specialties: Julie Spence believes that in spite of her previous involvements, her life’s purpose is to be a difference-maker in literacy. She has the passion, vision and energy to be a beacon of hope in uniting families around education and their children.
