Information/Write-up
What does it take to produce a CD? Well, it starts with great music. Radio Western understands that fact, and so we’ve gone out of our way to bring you the music of the London community. Here it is: “London Underground Three”: 18 bands, 6 engineers, 4 studios, 3 producers, one collection of great music!
When we embarked upon this 1995 compilation we examined closely to the standards we established for London Underground Two, last year. That is, bands didn’t have to hand over any master tape or last year. Instead, recordings were produced specifically for this disc. We didn’t look for any money from the musicians, the financing came from CHRW corporate sponsors, and fund raising events. With those parameters as our baseline we attempted to add even larger scope and we encouraged greater community involvement.
A team of CHRW volunteers listened to and voted on over 80 submissions. This determined the line up you hear here. The bands recorded at four studios in the city (two 24 track, two 16 track). Each studio provided it’s own ambiance, as it were.
Local artists created the art work. Nik Harrison designed the front cover art; Tom Nesbitt and Alex Vonbun captured the bands on film; Siobhan Humston inspired the back cover art, and Pete Watson did all the computer art and graphics. Studio engineers, Danny Broadbeck (db), Rob Nation, Joe Vaughan, and Joe Finlan (EMAC), Mark Prokopiou (Sirius), and Paul Veneson (Studio 107), went to the wall for the project. The associate producers Rob Sylipa and Pete Watson worked overtime. Watson, in fact, was again instrumental in helping to bring this project together.
Our corporate sponsors helped offset our financial losses: Backstage Pass; MCA Records Canada; Pepsi Canada; and Upper Canada Brewing, believed in the project enough to put dollars behind it. But didn’t believe any influence. The University of Western Ontario Students’ Council played a major stakeholder again. All told, some 150 people played a role in the making of this compilation.
As you listen to the disc bear that fact in mind. Then sit back and listen to the great music. In the end we hope this disc will remain a document, a snap shot in time.
