Information/Write-up

With the departure of multi-instrumentalist Ger O'Sullivan, the Mahones have adopted more of a roots or heartland rock style in the vein of Tom Petty or Mark Germino. In fact the opening track to Here Comes Lucky, "One Last Shot," sounds like a direct outtake from Germino's Radartown. In other instances, lead singer and songwriter Finny McConnell resembles Mark Knopfler ("Going Back to Dublin"); and Petty ("Here Comes Lucky"; and "Raise Your Hand"). The Irish component isn't entirely lost, however, it surfaces only in rare instances. While this band cringes at hearing Pogues comparisons, it wouldn't be unreasonable to invoke their one-time mentors' name, once again, upon hearing "Whiskey Devils"; McConnell has the boozy-Shane MacGowan-snarl down pat. But no; Here Comes Lucky is neither a Pogues-influenced work nor a Celtic-rock effort as it incorporates many different styles and influences. As the Mahones have grown, their sound has steadily evolved into one which they can finally call their own.
