Biography:
Paul James Band
Paul James, The Bermuda Tavern, and Lick'n'Stick
I formed my Band Lick'n'Stick while at The Bermuda Tavern, which was on the east side of Yonge St. at Gerrard St. I played there from 1969-1971. We played 6 forty minute sets a night, 6 days a week, from 7pm-1am with a 3 hour matinee from 3-6pm, on Saturdays. There were 3 topless Go-Go Dancers who danced on little stages located at the front, middle and rear of the club, they did not dance on the band stage which was in the middle of the club. We played opposite a wall sized mirror, that allow patrons to see the band better. The club itself was a long narrow room about the width of a 3 lane bowling alley. It was owned by the Cooper Brothers, who also owned The Brass Rail (AKA Yonge Station), The Zanzibar (AKA Circus Circus), and The Running Pump. I was 18 years old when I started playing there. I wasn't allowed to drink and wore dark sunglasses because the drinking age at the time was 21. It changed to 18 for one year and I was legal then the following year it changed to 19 when I turned 19. I was now a Professional Musician...I made a living playing music, $133. a week. I joined the Musician's Union in 1969. My girlfriend Erika Greenland (my first love and high school sweet heart) and I moved out of a rooming house on Brunswick St., and got our own apartment over a store on Spadina Ave. Grossman's Tavern was across the street and The El Mocambo was up the street. Kensington Market was around the corner which was ideal because we were both vegetarians at the time. I joined the Musician's Union in 1969...It is funny how a picture of a building can bring back so many memories,,, Here is a Picture of me(Paul James) playing in The Bermuda Tavern with my Band Lick'n'Stick in 1969... .. Wow that 50 years ago...
