Jive Ducktail & The Dukes were a Southern Ontario showband who brought the rock and roll of the 1950s and early 1960s back to club stages in the early 1980s. The name borrowed the slicked-back ducktail haircut of the original rock and roll era, and the set leaned on the songs that went with it.
Terry Greenside was the band's featured singer, with Don Egley among the players. Greenside was remembered as a gifted singer and entertainer. Egley singled out his reading of the Elvis Presley song 'Anything That's Part of You', and a drummer who played behind him recalled the intro to 'Cara Mia' giving him shivers.
In February 1981 the Dukes were in Newfoundland, playing the Breezeway Bar at Memorial University in St. John's on February 20 and 21, with a 4 to 5 p.m. matinee on the Saturday. Two weeks later the Corner Brook paper, The Western Star, advertised them for Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows.
The band's only known record came out in 1981 on Tuesday Records, the label Greg Hambleton had launched in 1970 with Steel River's 'Ten Pound Note'. Hambleton produced the A-side, 'Gonna Find Myself A New Love', a song credited to Lodge and published through his Axe Music. The writer was almost certainly David Lodge, the bass player and singer from Major Hoople's Boarding House, who also wrote Mama Coco's 1981 single for Hambleton.
The flip side went back to 1966. 'Sure Gonna Miss Her', the Bobby Russell song that Gary Lewis & The Playboys took into the Billboard top ten, was produced for the Dukes by Bill Geffros and cut down to a brisk two minutes.
Both sides were recorded at The Waxworks in St. Jacobs, Ontario. The record was manufactured by Axe Records Limited of Toronto as TUE 3003, with the MAPL logo on both green labels.
Greenside died in Woodstock on March 14, 2019. In a message after his death, Egley wrote that he still had a recording of Greenside singing 'Anything That's Part of You'.
