Insight

Johann Sebastian Bach’s great-great-great-great-great grandson grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. That’s how David Sebastian Bach tells it, and Canadian Musician printed it in 1987 when they visited the performing arts school he ran from a converted house on Main Street East, where a bust of the old maestro kept watch over the dance studio.

By then David had already packed in a career. He was singing on local radio at four and made his first record at five. In the mid-1960s he left for London, where he recorded German schlager for EMI Electrola and played the Guardian’s Brother in Space: 1999.

Back in Hamilton he was a founding member of the Leman Brothers Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, named for Craig and Michael Leman. The two brothers died of Duchenne muscular dystrophy within six months of each other in 1982 and 1983. ‘What Can We Do?’ was his song for them. Fellow Hamiltonian Ian Thomas arranged and produced it in his own studio, and every dollar of net proceeds went to the foundation.
