In 1984, Anna Gutmanis recorded a two-song demo with Toronto band L'Étranger. The recordings received airplay on Ontario college radio stations, with ‘Empire’, a song addressing racism and sexism, charting at several stations.
Gutmanis re-released ‘Empire’ digitally in 2017 through TuneCore, citing the continuing relevance of the song's message.
