The Métis Series is a special collection of music and songs of the Métis people. At a festival, a home party or any other gathering, these selections will bring you countless hours of enjoyment.
Throughout the years Métis Fiddle Music has been performed everywhere from log cabins; bunk houses, homes, halls and various out-door events. The Music is rich in culture and the artists that perform this music are genuine folk icons. The music has been passed down from generation to generation is now being shared with hundreds of Métis dance organizations and musicians.
Square dancing, jigging and fiddle playing were the highlights of every gathering of Métis who lived along the river system. The distinctive culture of the Métis is symbolized through their music, dance and special articles of clothing such as the sash. The Red River Jig and Reels, borrowed from the Scots and the French, were known by every fiddle player and any excuse to get a dance going was acted upon. They say jigging is bred in the bone for many Métis and to be sure all Métis like to dance and have fun, and like their voyageur forefathers many Métis have a competitive nature.
Jigs; Reels; Breakdowns; Waltzes; Polkas; and special Pattern Dance, music has been repeatedly heard across Canada. From the backwoods cabin, to kitchen parties, to dance halls of the Prairie Provinces, Métis fiddle music has earned its place in Canadian Heritage.
