Mark Malibu and the Wasagas were formed in Scarborough, Ontario in 1979 by guitarist Mark Sanders, also known as Mark Malibu. The band grew out of Sanders’ earlier teenage punk group the DeGeneRatz, but soon moved in a different direction as he began adding surf instrumentals such as ‘Wipe Out’ and ‘Pipeline’ to the set.
The original lineup included Mark Sanders on lead guitar, Steve Turner on drums, Buzz on bass, and Chris Welch on rhythm guitar. Chris Welch was later replaced by Christine Oleksyk. The band was part of Toronto’s early punk-era underground, playing house parties, underage shows, and early club dates, including appearances at the Turning Point.
Unlike most bands around them, the Wasagas played instrumental surf music with a punk edge. Their songs were built around loud, reverb-heavy guitar, fast tempos, and a garage-band feel. The group later became known as “Canada’s original Surf Punks,” a description that suited both their sound and their early start.
In 1981, the band recorded seven songs at Cottingham Sound in Toronto with help from high-school friend Steve Jeskie. Some of those recordings, including ‘Wasagas Run’ and ‘Buzz Beat,’ later appeared on Toronto underground cassette compilations. Another early song, ‘Psychedelic Summer,’ was later used in the Canadian horror film Happy Hell Night.
The original version of the Wasagas lasted until 1982. For many years, the band was remembered mainly by people connected to the Toronto underground scene, with only a few recordings circulating.
In 2014, Mark Sanders brought the band back for Great Lakes Surf Battle 9. What was meant to be a reunion show led to a full return. That same year, Original Surf Punk Recordings collected the band’s early material and brought it back into circulation.
The Wasagas then began recording new music. Return of the Wasagas was released in 2017, followed by Crash Monster Beach in 2018, the Wasaga Run / Dawn Patrol picture disc in 2018, Dance Party a’ Go Go in 2020, Haunted Hotrod Beach Party in 2023, the Pepper Stomp EP in 2025, and Knock Me Out! in 2026.
Mark Sanders has remained the main creative force behind the band, writing the material, leading the group on guitar, and producing recordings through Film PaniK Ltd. The Wasagas’ music combines surf, garage rock, hot-rod themes, horror-movie atmosphere, and punk energy, while staying mainly instrumental.
The band has also reached new listeners through film, television, radio, and the international surf-rock scene. Their song ‘Wasaga Showdown’ was used in the season 6 finale of Good Witch, and Sanders has also hosted the Surfin’ a Go-Go Radio Show on Surf Rock Radio.
As of the Knock Me Out! era, the lineup includes Mark Malibu on electric guitars, Steve Turner on drums and percussion, Ricky Wasaga on bass, Fast Mike on guitar, and Starlotte Satine as the group’s go-go presence. Earlier reunion-era lineups also included musicians such as Sharny, Wavy Davy, and Andrew Wright.
