Liner notes
When a noisy tourist lounge is silenced on a Saturday evening, there must be something very special happening. This was a common occurrence when Cathy Kinsman performed an original composition or an a capella rendition of “Evergreen”. It is not surprising she is being received in the same manner by the demanding entertainment industry.
Cathy’s early musical days began as she was growing up in Minden, Ontario. At first, she sang with her five sisters in church choirs and at social functions around the county, then went on to play the leading roles in numerous high school musicals. Returning to Minden three years later, Cathy headlined the county fair backed by a seven piece band. It was a memorable event for Cathy, her band, and especially the crowds that attended.
While studying all aspects of the performing arts for two years at Sheridan College, Cathy was chosen to play the romantic leading lady in both annual musical productions. During the summer breaks Cathy booked herself into county clubs in the Toronto–Hamilton area. Cathy’s acting abilities were recently put to the test in Cinderella, starring with Barbara Hamilton and Tom Kneebone (directed by Leslie Yeo) in one of Canada’s most prestigious halls, Hamilton Place.
Official recognition as a songwriter first came to Cathy when chosen as a finalist in the 1979 CFTR talent search. Soon after she was invited to perform “Fly Free Away” (written about the hostage rescue mission in Iran) for an international police convention which was filmed by CITY-TV in Toronto. The subsequent release of Cathy’s first single (Flying So High / Fly Free Away), received playlisting across Canada and the United States. “Tremendous talent” and “Great potential” were recurring comments made by music and program directors across the continent.
Now at the age of 21; a brilliant career awaits a very special and talented lady.
