Information/Write-up

Glen Duley (d. December 2023) was a passionate Canadian hard rock musician whose career spanned several decades, leaving an indelible mark on British Columbia’s independent music scene. Known for his powerful voice, gritty guitar work, and emotive songwriting, Duley fronted two notable bands in the 1980s—Steelback and China Blue—before returning in 2016 with a final five-track solo EP titled Thus Far.

Steelback, added to the CitizenFreak archive in April 2012, released an album featuring the anthemic single “Five Star Lady” in 1982—an energetic slice of arena rock that captured the spirit of the era. China Blue followed in 1985 with a self-titled full-length album showcasing a more polished yet equally heartfelt sound, marked by Duley’s vocals and harmonica playing. That band—featuring Wayne Ellis (bass), Nicki Scianna (guitars), Jeff Nagazine (drums), and Andre Kunkel (keys)—was formally archived on CitizenFreak in December 2013. Wayne Ellis later reached out directly, and a reissue of the China Blue 1987 album is currently in the works with a renowned metal reissue label.

Produced and engineered by Rick Salt, Thus Far was independently released through Windjammer Productions. The five-track EP returned to a harder-edged sound, revealing Duley’s undiminished commitment to the genre that first inspired him. The record featured a reimagining of A Foot in Cold Water’s classic Canadian song “Make Me Do Anything You Want”, which also appeared on the Steelback album.

In his final years, Duley remained connected to the Canadian music community, reaching out to share his new work and expressing interest in a proper reissue of China Blue. His message, sent in May 2016, reflected his warmth and appreciation for those preserving Canada’s musical heritage:

“I really like what you are doing with your website and would like to know if you would accept a submission of my new EP.”

Glen Duley’s legacy lives on through his recordings—gritty, melodic, and deeply personal chapters in the story of Canadian rock.
