Information/Write-up

In the vibrant tapestry of Toronto's 1990s underground hip-hop scene, the Bandits emerged as a compelling force, weaving narratives rooted in their urban experiences. Comprised of Speng, Dman Dillinger, and Alkatraz, the trio hailed from diverse neighborhoods—Regent Park/Bleeker, South Bleeker, and Scarborough—bringing together a rich mosaic of perspectives.

Their collaboration with producer Scam of Concrete Mob culminated in two notable 12-inch releases on Flatline Records. The first featured "Movin Tha Pawns" and "War," tracks that encapsulated the gritty realism of their environment. The second release introduced "Trust" and "How Ya Living," the latter showcasing talents of Des (a.k.a. Ion Mike) and Savagas. Des, a conscious emcee from Alkatraz's neighborhood, and Savagas, a Montreal native who joined the session spontaneously, added unique dimensions to the group's sound.

Despite their brief discography, the Bandits left an indelible mark on Toronto's hip-hop landscape. Their authentic storytelling and raw production resonated with listeners, reflecting the city's diverse cultural fabric. Post-disbandment, Alkatraz pursued a solo career, releasing three albums that continued to echo the group's foundational themes.

For enthusiasts and collectors, the Bandits' rare 12-inch records are available on CitizenFreak.com, offering a tangible connection to a pivotal era in Canadian hip-hop history.
