Information/Write-up
From the back of the full-length LP (4 of the tracks appear here on this CBC recording):
A Sanderling is a type of Arctic sandpiper found in Newfoundland and in the plural, it's a group of seven very musical young people found in Newfoundland. At best, most Canadian-made "discovery" albums turn out to be interesting, but are often filed and forgotten. The Sanderlings put them all to flight on their debut album. This is the best Canadian new sound we've heard in 1970 so far — and that includes groups from the Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal scenes. "The Sanderlings Show" brought instant favourability index from guest stars on the show throughout its history.
Ranging in age from 13 to 18 years, The Sanderlings come from St. John's families. They include Beth Harrington, the oldest member and group leader. Denise and Tommy Harrington, Leslie Lake, Chris and Andy Hutson and Mike Barnes.
On this, their first album are nine songs by Canadians. "Don't Try To Please" (It Takes Time) are by fifteen year old Shirley Ekblaw of Oshawa, Ontario. "Loving You Is Just Like Walking In The Sunshine" is by Dorothy Moore, who with husband Danny (ex member of the Rhythm Pals) now resides in Vancouver. "David's Song" was written by Doug Blais, formerly of the Halifax rock group "Initial Swing", and "Christina's Song" is from Rob Cannell of Nova Scotia. "Funny Sad World" is by Don Mclean of Halifax, and Bill Ruzicka, a TV producer now with CBC's Montreux '70, wrote "Roller Coaster Ride", and co-wrote "The Crowd Inside" with E. Slingerland. Finally, co-writers of two more originals are William Whelan, who now teaches music at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Heather Cooke for "Christina's Song", "Love One Another" by Errol Jones of Truro, Nova Scotia was a winner in the 1969 song contest held by CTV's "Cross-Canada Talent Search".
Presenting "The Sanderlings", a delightful group of young people who produce a sound that has all the intensity, vigor and richness of youth.
