Information/Write-up

Dennis was born in Cranbrook, BC on July 20, 1944. He was interested in music at a very young age. By the time he was two he could follow songs on the radio. His grandmother gave him a guitar when he was eight from then on music occupied all of his time. Dennis grew up and went to school in the Windermere Valley.

He played at school with Stan Harrison & Huntley Geisbrecht and he also played for dances with his dad when he was fifteen. He joined the Banff Playboys in 1962 and played with them for about 3 years. For a while he worked as a radio announcer in Cranbrook and Nelson but went back to making his own music.

He moved to Whitehorse where he played mostly at the Copper King. He then went on to Alaska where he lived for several years and played in such places as Kodiak, Anchorage, Seward, Fairbanks, and Nome.

One of the biggest highlights of Dennis’s career was playing with Dick Damron and the Stoney Creek Boys in Vegas, where he met Elvis Presley’s guitar player, James Burton and Alabama’s guitar player, Jeff Cook. James Burton was quite impressed with Dennis’s guitar playing, so he jammed with the band for a while and then for the rest of the night he regaled them with stories of Elvis.

Dennis played at several music festivals including Expo 86 and the Craven Big Valley Jamboree. He also played with many different bands over the years, such as John Tracey, Northwind, Black Diamond, Hurricane Hill, Blue Heeler, Ted Miller Band, Cross Over Country, The Malloy Gang and the Patricia Conroy Band just to name a few.

Dennis spent the last part of his musical career back in the Columbia Valley playing with several different local musician friends and enjoyed making up for lost time with his folks Joe and Irene.

Dennis passed away suddenly on February 7, 2003. His sense of humor and play on words made it fun and crazy to be around him and it also came out in his music. He was a remarkable human being and will be sadly missed.
