Information/Write-up

Billy Butt and the Brats were a Toronto-based new wave band active in the early 1980s. Their only known release, the punchy synth-driven single “Surveillance” b/w “No, I Can’t Say No”, was released on Platinum Wave Records and featured arrangements by Billy Butt and R. Pratt, produced by Jon Bojicic. The lineup included Billy Butt vocals, Rob Pratt guitar and vocals, Robert Pointer on bass, Tony Rumolo on keys, Scott McCann on drums. A later lineup as Paradox had Gil Roberts on drums and followed by other lead guitar players.

In 1982, the band changed its name to Paradox and shifted toward a more progressive rock sound. Paradox quickly became a fixture in the thriving Toronto nightclub scene, building a loyal following through original music and high-energy performances. They played major venues throughout Ontario, including the El Mocambo, Rondun, Larry's Hideaway, Queensbury Arms, Knob Hill, Tony’s East, Kee to Bala, the University of Western Ontario, and the Coronet in Kitchener. A standout moment came with their 1984 performance of “Dream You to Life” at the El Mocambo, captured on video.

Paradox disbanded before the emergence of a separate Quebec band of the same name.

In 2014, key members—including Bob Pointer, Rob Balian, WD, and Gil Roberts—reunited under the name Li’l Rooster, shifting into a blues-rock direction while continuing to write and perform new music. Li’l Rooster carries forward the creative legacy of Paradox with a fresh energy and an all-original repertoire.
