About This Title

'Good Luck to the Boys of the Allies'. Patriotic song of World War I by the Toronto composer Morris Manley. Published privately by Manley in 1915 ('as sung by Little Miss Mildred Manley, Canada's Greatest Child Vocalist'), it was recorded by Lewis J. Howell (Victor) and Herbert Stuart (Columbia). An arrangement was recorded by the Victor Military Band, and another appeared on piano rolls. The song was revived in 1939 in the folio Soldier's Songs of Canada published by G.V. Thompson. In an arrangement by John Beckwith the song was recorded by Nelson Lohnes, baritone, with the Elmer Iseler Singers and a small instrumental ensemble on Musical Toronto: A Concert Party (1984, Marquis MAR-104). Manley, of whom little is known save that he lived in New York after 1930, wrote other songs, including 'I Love You, Canada' (1915, with Kenneth McInnis), 'Goodbye Mother Dear' (1916, recorded by Henry Burr), and several which were adapted for piano rolls.
