This album tries to capture the defining coming-of-age experience my best buddy Ulrich and I had in the summer of 1968. It was the first time he and I were set free to escape the stuffy atmosphere of our small town in Germany, where we grew up. Barely 17 at the time, he and I set out to hitch-hike to Italy. We had no specific destination in mind, but as it turned out, the journey itself became the destination. Though a bit scary at first, not knowing where you would end up on any day was incredibly liberating. We eventually wound up in a small seaside resort north of Rome, where we got to know many wonderful young people our age, so that we decided to stay and not even go on to Rome.

The following year we went again, but separately. Ulrich took the train for a good stretch of the way, while I hitched the whole way and eventually went on to Rome and Naples after he went back home. I loved this way of travelling so much, that after graduating from high school and my service in the German navy, I was off again, this time to Greece, where I got to know and fell in love with a Canadian girl from West Vancouver. When I returned to Germany with her and she had to fly back to Canada, I just had to see her again.

So the following year I hopped on a plane to Montreal and hitched all the way across Canada to Vancouver, where we had a happy reunion. During my time in Vancouver, she and I hatched a plan to go travelling again. This time we hitch-hiked all the way to Buenos Aires, only making use of a train twice (in Mexico and Bolivia) and using a plane once (Panama to Cali, Colombia). We eventually took a passenger ship from Buenos Aires to Vigo in Spain and hitched back to Germany from there. By the end of another year in Germany (1973), we were married and flew back to Vancouver where my new life would start.

The songs for this album were written between 1974 and 1976 and were recorded in 1977 in the basement of my Mum's house, where another friend of ours had set up a small hobby studio.
