Kim Stockwood with Bill King - "Sometimes The Moon" (Slaight Music): It has been a long time in the making, but Sometimes The Moon, the keenly-anticipated collaboration of singer/songwriter Kim Stockwood and veteran pianist/producer Bill King, is finally being released today (Oct. 20).

The project features the pure-voiced Stockwood offering up fresh interpretations of some of her favourite songs. The title track of the EP has a particular resonance for Stockwood, as it was written by fellow Newfoundlander and good friend (the late) Ron Hynes (aka the Man of a Thousand Songs).

In a press release, the singer explains that "Ron Hynes wrote this song over 25 years ago, but never recorded it. When I first started singing in St. John’s in the early ’90’s, he called me out of the blue and asked me to demo it (and) I was so honoured. I didn’t know Ron, but I was already in awe of him. We went on to become friends, and I am proud to say that he was my mentor. Ron passed away in November 2015, and I miss him..…. I never thought I’d record this song without him, and thanks to his family I didn’t have to… "

She does the tune justice, imbuing Hynes' ever-eloquent lyrics with a real emotional resonance. Hynes' previously recorded guitar part is reprised here and is perfectly augmented with King's fluent piano and the poignant violin playing of Ben Mink (FM, kd lang).

Another standout track on this charming collection is her vibrant reimagining of the classic “I’ll Never Smile Again,” a song written by Canadian Ruth Lowe.

Stockwood has come a long way musically since "Jerk," her '90s pop hit. This is her first LP since her 2011 ECMA-winning traditional release, Back to the Water, and is a welcome return by a bright talent.
