Insight

Art Grant was a well-known local singer from the Haisla community. The Haisla are the First Nations band that has been here from time immemorial. Art was a singer-songwriter and store owner on the reserve (Kitamaat Village - note different spelling, as when Alcan Aluminum Industries built their plant here in 1953 they 'rebranded' the spelling). Art would often perform in Kitimat and the area and was quite the draw; however, there are not a lot of surviving records of his songs. He had three recordings on the Aragon label. His songs will be featured in an upcoming exhibition - the first ever 'Haisla Artists Exhibition', which will include paintings, prints, carvings, music, and multimedia.
