Tokyo Streets/ A Dream Girl To Me // Anna King/ Interlude

Tokyo Streets was one of Glamorcult’s earliest releases, issued in Canada in 1983 on Freedom Records as FR-EP-004. The four-song 12-inch EP was produced and recorded by Eric Simpson, who wrote three of the four selections himself; ‘Interlude’ was co-written with Buckley. All four selections were published by Simpson’s Tears In The Rain Music and carry the MAPL designation for 100% Canadian content.

The title track became the recording most closely associated with Glamorcult’s early years. Simpson later recalled that ‘Tokyo Streets’ remained on CFNY-FM’s playlists for years during the 1980s, and the EP version was subsequently included on The Hardest Hits Collection Volume Three in 1993.

The EP also contains ‘A Dream Girl to Me’ and ‘Anna King’, two recordings whose original master tapes Simpson later told the Museum of Canadian Music were destroyed in a flood. Their survival on the original vinyl therefore gives this small independent release added archival importance.

Tokyo Streets appeared during the period when Simpson was developing Glamorcult out of the electronic experimentation of his earlier group Drama. The music combined synthesizers, programmed rhythms and pop songwriting with the broader visual idea behind Glamorcult: a meeting of music, fashion and changing pop culture.
