One Bright Morning contains eight instrumental jazz performances, including six Tony Quarrington compositions spanning swing, Latin, South African and other rhythmic influences. The album also features Thelonious Monk’s ‘’Round Midnight’, recast as an uptempo Latin arrangement, and Bronisław Kaper’s ‘Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo’, performed as a duet by Quarrington and pianist Brian Dickinson.
The recording brings together several prominent Toronto jazz musicians, including pianists Bernie Senensky and Brian Dickinson, saxophonists Kirk MacDonald and Shawn Nykwist, bassist Kieran Overs and drummer Barry Elmes. Kevin Turcotte appears on trumpet and Terry Lukiwski on trombone.
Released in 1999, the album received favourable reviews and gained airplay on Canadian campus and community radio. ‘Savannah / For South Africa’, with its rolling melodic lines and South African-influenced rhythms, and Quarrington’s unusual arrangement of ‘’Round Midnight’ were among the performances singled out for attention.
Following the album’s release, Quarrington appeared at Ontario festivals including the Toronto Du Maurier Downtown Jazz Festival, the Hillebrand Jazz Festival, the Markham Jazz Festival and the Guelph Jazz Festival. He also performed regularly at Toronto-area venues including Whistler’s, Quigley’s, Gate 403, the Charlotte Room, Manhattan’s, Graffiti’s and the Windsor Arms.
Quarrington was subsequently featured in Canadian Musician magazine and participated in the magazine’s May 2000 guitar seminar alongside Rik Emmett and Joe Satriani. During this period, he continued working as a guitarist, composer, arranger and producer. His production work included projects with pianist Joanne Brackeen and singer Daisy DeBolt, whose recording featured Jane Bunnett, Phil Dwyer and Dave Restivo.
Quarrington had also received a 1999 Juno Award for his production work on Willie P. Bennett’s Heartstrings. As a sideman and accompanist, he performed with Club Django, the Jeff Bird Trio, violinist San Murata, saxophonists Chris Robinson and Ryan Oliver, and vocalist Dee Kaye. He also worked with specialty ensembles including Mike Scott’s Hawaiianaires and the Yiddish Swingtet with Jonno Lightstone and Jordan Klapman.
