Caribou was a Montréal-based francophone rock group centred on singer, acoustic guitarist and songwriter Serge Poirier and bassist, arranger and musical director Gaston ‘Toto’ Pouliot. Blending rock, funk, blues and progressive elements, the group released a self-titled album and an accompanying single through the Québec label Filoson in 1977.

Caribou emerged during the early development of Filoson, a Montréal production company and record label associated with Cinram’s French-language recording activities. The group’s album, issued as FIL 77103, was among the label’s first LP releases and was produced by Michel Kordupel, who had recently joined Cinram to oversee French-language productions.

Poirier and Pouliot formed the creative core of the group. Poirier supplied the principal vocals and acoustic guitar, while Pouliot played bass, shared the songwriting credits, arranged the material and directed the music. The record labels credit the words and music jointly to Poirier and Pouliot, although the back cover places Poirier’s name beneath each individual song title.

Their original French-language repertoire ranged from concise, rhythm-driven songs such as ‘Trou Percé’ and ‘Gretta Cromo’ to the extended seven-minute performance ‘Le Blues Sale.’ Across the album, the group moved freely between melodic rock, progressive keyboard textures, funk-oriented rhythms and blues-based improvisation.

The sessions brought together musicians already connected to Montréal’s professional rock community. Keyboardist Claude Hétu contributed piano, organ, Moog and Clavinet, while Denis Violetti played electric guitar. Both musicians had recently been associated with the final period of the influential Québec group Les Sinners, giving Caribou a direct connection to an earlier generation of francophone rock.

Violetti had also released solo recordings and worked with Beauregard, Violletti & Ste-Claire, later continuing as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and central member of Blues Gitan. His work with Caribou formed part of a wider career that crossed rock, pop, funk, blues and music influenced by Mediterranean and Middle Eastern traditions.

The remaining instrumental lineup consisted of drummer Daniel Dépelteau, percussionist Claude Peysson and harmonica player Rock Enrue. Nicole Pouliot, Ronald Moreni and producer Michel Kordupel contributed additional vocals. Dépelteau and Moreni also appeared elsewhere within Montréal’s recording community, further connecting Caribou to the city’s network of session musicians and independent artists.

The album was recorded by Claude Renaud at Studio Filoson, located at 8355 Devonshire Street in Montréal. Kordupel supervised the production, while Filoson handled the release and RCA Limited distributed the finished record throughout Canada.

Caribou also issued ‘Trou Percé’ b/w ‘Gretta Cromo’ as Filoson FIL-104. Drawn from the album, the single emphasized the shorter and more rhythmically immediate side of the group’s music. No further recordings under the Caribou name are presently documented.

Although Caribou left behind only one album and one known single, the group occupied a meaningful place within the changing landscape of late-1970s Québec rock. Its personnel connected the project to Les Sinners and the broader Montréal studio community, while its music captured the meeting of francophone songwriting with progressive rock, funk and blues. The result was a brief but distinctive collaboration between established musicians, a newly developing Québec label and the increasingly varied sounds of the province’s independent recording scene.
