Information/Write-up
The Sock was written by Sipson P. Kloop (pen name of Al Parker, a milkman from Surrey B.C. who composed songs on the run). The Valentines really rock on The Sock with driving bass, strummed guitar, drums and two good sax solos. The song is an Elvis tribute which tells a story about an article of Elvis Presley's clothing (a sock) they had picked up from Colonel Tom Parker as a souvenir. The lyrics include "The little hole in the stocking is from the Rolling and a' Rocking made by Elvis Presley's left toe." With cute lines like that, the record couldn't miss and in fact entered Vancouver's radio charts on Nov. 5, 1960 and climbed all the way to Vancouver radio station C-Fun's # 3 position on Dec. 17, 1960.
The flip side also written by Sipson P. Kloop Sixteen Senoritas has a novel Mexican influence and is a driving rocker with sax, piano, driving bass, drums and really cute vocals from The Valentines with a hot sax solo!
The Valentines' also sang backup for Vancouver rock singer Les Vogt (who had left The Prowlers in 1960) on his excellent pre-protest era song about the older generation titled The Blamers on Iona 1001 which entered the Vancouver charts on July 9, 1960 and reached #1. It Knocked out Elvis Presley's It's Now Or Never from the top spot, but only for the one week of Aug. 6, 1960.
