Information/Write-up
Flying Tiger was a Canadian rock band formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in the early 1970s. The group gained attention for their lone single, "What's Your Name" b/w "Dreamin'", released in 1975 on London Records (catalogue L2568) in conjunction with Franklin Records. The single was produced by Chad Allan, founding member of The Guess Who and Brave Belt.
According to RPM Weekly (Vol. 23 No. 1, March 1, 1975), Allan was working out of Winnipeg’s Roade West Studios, where he was recording material for an upcoming solo album featuring all original compositions. During this period, he also took on production duties for Flying Tiger:
“Allan is currently involved in producing a band called ‘Flying Tiger’ and an artist named Glen McCabe. Both artists’ sessions have been booked in Winnipeg.”
— RPM Weekly, March 1, 1975
The A-side, "What’s Your Name", is a hard-driving rocker, showcasing gritty guitar work and tight rhythm section energy characteristic of Manitoba '70s rock. The B-side, "Dreamin’", takes a more restrained approach with a laid-back, bluesy groove, reminiscent of BTO’s “Blue Collar.”
The single was written by Jerry (J.D.) Bednar, who also handled lead vocals and rhythm guitar.
Jerry Bednar: vocals, rhythm guitar
Glen Stacey: lead guitar
Mel Spaller: bass
Gerry Reimer: guitar
David Deane: keyboards/bass
Each member had deep roots in the Manitoba music scene:
Jerry Bednar, active in local groups like London Fog and Granny before Flying Tiger, later became a radio personality on The Great AM Shakedown (CJUM-FM) and worked in marine retail until his retirement in 2022.
Glen Stacey began playing in Winnipeg’s teen band circuit before joining Flying Tiger. He later relocated to Vancouver and played in a number of groups, including The Limit and The Gigabytes. Now based in California, he performs jazz and soul under Glen Stacey Music.
Mel Spaller, the band’s bassist, previously played in The Trail Riders with his brother John. He passed away in 2023 at the age of 72.
Gerry Reimer (credited in later years as Garry E. Reimer) was part of the group’s later lineup. Now a visual artist based in Calgary, he exhibits paintings under his own name.
David Deane, originally on bass or keys, continues to perform and release music. He maintains an active online presence through YouTube and SoundCloud as “RocknRollRedemption.”
Although Flying Tiger did not release additional material beyond their debut single, their connection to Chad Allan and the calibre of musicianship among its members has earned the band a cult following among Canadian rock collectors.
Flying Tiger stands as a lesser-known but meaningful footnote in Winnipeg’s rich rock history—part of the same lineage that produced The Guess Who, Brave Belt, and later BTO.
