Womankind is made up of five friends who have been making music together for a couple of years now. This may come as a surprise to some, since the band is pretty low key and have no releases to date.
Bass player Rich explains, "We're just slow. We take our time. We like playing for recreation. Our motivation is just to make music we like and put out a record. Chris, our guitarist, plays bass with Destroyer and is on tour right now, so that puts us on hiatus for periods."
Their music is very dirty, brash and spits in your face every second it gets. With two bass players it's easy to understand how their music is so heavy and dark. In person, however, they're very friendly and polite people - the polar opposite of their music.
The band features past and present members of the Secret Three, Great Aunt Ida, 3 Inches of Blood, Destroyer and Video Tokyo, but sound like a band signed to Amphetamine Reptile Records.
Singer and bassist Scott talks about the band's influences: "I think initially it was just some '90s bands that we wanted to touch upon and reference, bands on Touch and Go, Amphetamine Reptile and Quarter Stick. I've been playing with Brady for 19 years and we've been talking about a band like this since we started playing."
The band recorded their eponymous LP live in an afternoon with Jordan Koop, who also mixed the record. This gave it the raw stripped down feel that the band was looking for.
They found a home for their LP on one of our country's finest labels, Nominal, which is making a name for itself by releasing high quality records to the world. Nominal is helping put the spotlight on Vancouver's amazing - yes, amazing - rock and roll bands such as Womankind.
