The Guess Who started out in Winnipeg as Al and the Silvertones in 1958. By 1962 the group was called Chad Allan and the Reflections, and that year they recorded their debut single, ‘Tribute To Buddy Holly’, at Kay Bank Studios in Minneapolis. It was released in early 1963 on Canadian-American Records. They returned to Kay Bank in the early summer of 1963 to record ‘Inside Out’ and ‘Made In England’.
Reo issued the two instrumentals in 1964 as a single credited to Bob Ashley and the Reflections, after the band’s piano player. It is the only 45 released under that name. Chad Allan, born Allan Kowbel, wrote the A-side, ‘Inside Out’, a rock and roll instrumental led by Ashley’s piano. Randy Bachman, 19 at the time of the session, wrote the B-side, ‘Made In England’, a guitar instrumental in the style of The Shadows. Both tracks were later included on Hey Ho (What You Do To Me!), the group’s second album for Quality Records in 1965.
In 1964 the band became Chad Allan and the Expressions, and later that year they recorded ‘Shakin’ All Over’, the first release under The Guess Who? name. Bob Ashley stayed with the band until December 1965, when Burton Cummings replaced him.
