Sunday Wilde’s third album, What Man!? Oh THAT Man!!!, was launched from the wilds of Northern Ontario. The recording features 11 tracks, with all but one drawn from Wilde’s own blues and jazz writing, exploring grief, anger, torment, sadness, frustration, love, and loss.
The album features Rockabilly Hall of Fame upright bassist Ronnie Hayward, known for Ronnie Artur, the Ronnie Hayward Trio, and The Nervous Fellas. His gut-string upright bass gives the album an authentic rooted sound. Also featured is Ecuadorian guitarist David West, an internationally active musician known for his work with the Papa Duke Band. West’s custom double-sided guitar and varied playing bring a blend of modern, international, and old-world textures to the recording.
The album opens with “That Man Drives Me Mad,” a forceful, dirty honky-tonk blues about the madness of love. “Sunday’s Midnight Blues” moves into slow jazz-blues territory, built around the feeling that no one is immune to the midnight blues. “My Baby’s Dead” is a gypsy-blues piece about a woman’s nightmare after loss, while the closing track, “Time to Say Goodbye,” is a haunting blues ballad about reaching the point where one must move on.
Sunday Wilde is an intense musician, vocalist, and writer who lives in the wilderness and has performed everywhere from funeral parlours and small logging towns to blues festivals. What Man!? Oh THAT Man!!! is her third album. She has received four Ontario Arts Council grants and has shared stages with artists including Nick Moss and the Flip Tops, Fathead, and Little Miss Higgins.
