Information/Write-up

“Torque, Torque” is a rare promotional 7-inch credited to The Howl Brothers, a fictional band created by Canadian author Paul Quarrington for his novel Whale Music. Issued in 1994 on Galaxy Records, the single was recorded by Rheostatics, who also composed and performed the music for the film adaptation of Whale Music, directed by Richard J. Lewis and released the same year.

Pressed in very small numbers and never commercially distributed, the record was produced as a promotional artifact tied to the film’s release. Copies were issued on standard black vinyl and clear green vinyl. The track had earlier appeared on a limited Galaxy Records CD issued in 1992, prior to the film’s release. The label carries a fictional 1962 copyright and release date, credited to Galaxy Records, a division of Green Sprouts Music, reflecting the retro backstory of the Howl Brothers, loosely inspired by the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson. Musically, “Torque, Torque” adopts an early-1960s rockabilly feel, and the single has since become a sought-after Rheostatics-related collectible. Galaxy Records/Rheostatics also issued a separate promotional 7-inch on white vinyl by The Larry Davis Group, “Fan Letter to Michael Jackson” in 1995.
