Sunday Wilde’s second album contains 10 new originals. She weaves the sound of vintage blues throughout the recording, adding a touch of jazz around the edges. Wilde moves through a variety of perspectives and moods, from joyfulness, sorrow, lost love, torment, and angst to moments of humour and resilience.
As a songwriter, Wilde writes directly and without compromise. Her lyrical style resonates with people from all walks of life, while her vocals capture the essence of what her words speak: truth, raw passion, power, and beauty.
On “Don’t Sit Around Waiting,” Wilde pleads with listeners to get up and make things happen for themselves. “I Guess I Didn’t Hear You Right” revisits a 1950s-era sound with a soulful piece about lost love. The darker blues piece “Trouble Coming At Me from Behind” reflects on distressful times and reminds listeners that they are not alone. “Johnson Avenue Scat,” co-written with Wolfe Wall, brings a lighter touch, with Wilde’s scatting set against Wall’s flute playing.
The album features internationally renowned guitarist David West from Ecuador, known for his work with the Papa Duke Band, performing on a custom double-sided guitar. The recording also includes bass player Tom Sinkins of the Bay Street Blues Band, Wolfe Wall on flute, cello, and clarinet, Sunday Wilde on vocals and piano, and Wilde’s son Lucas Paulson performing his own piece.
Since its release in 2009, the album has ranked #6 on the Roots Music Report in Canada, #1 on LURADIO for three weeks on the roots charts, #3 Top Blues Album on CFBX in Kamloops, and #12 on campus radio stations across Canada on the roots charts. It was featured on a Valentine’s Day sampler issued by The Alternate Root, received jazz awards at GarageBand, and received airplay on roots and blues stations worldwide.
Sunday Wilde has performed with artists including Reno Jack, Ronnie Hayward, Nick Moss and the Flip Tops, Fathead, Terry Wilkins, and Little Miss Higgins. She has appeared on large festival stages as well as in funeral parlours and coffee houses. A powerful and intense vocalist, her delivery and songwriting make it clear that she speaks from experience. She has also received two Ontario Arts Council grants for songwriting and recording.
