Information/Write-up

White Heat were a melodic hard rock and AOR band formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1987. Emerging from the Western Canadian club circuit at a time when polished arena-rock production and radio-friendly hooks dominated the market, the band combined elements of hard rock, synthesizer-driven pop, and late-1980s AOR in the style of acts such as Honeymoon Suite, Glass Tiger, and Journey.

The group was founded by Jim Galloway (lead vocals, guitar) and Wayne Young (keyboards, vocals) following the breakup of their earlier Saskatchewan new-wave band Hypno-Gogo. Seeking a heavier and more commercially viable rock direction, they assembled a new lineup featuring Allen Hunnie (guitar, vocals), Russ Goozee (bass, vocals), and Alec Friesen (drums).

Winnipeg in the late 1980s was producing a growing number of nationally visible rock acts, and White Heat quickly developed a reputation on the regional circuit for their strong musicianship and highly polished sound. Their blend of melodic songwriting, layered keyboards, and dual-guitar arrangements positioned them squarely within the rising Canadian AOR scene.

The band secured a deal with CBS Associated Records, and in 1989 released their debut album ‘We Never Heard of You Either’. The album was recorded at major North American studios including Metalworks Studios in Mississauga, Phase One Studios in Toronto, and The Broc in New Jersey, reflecting the label’s investment in producing a radio-ready commercial rock record.

Production was handled by White Heat and Mark S. Berry, with recording assistance from noted Canadian producer and engineer Terry Brown, best known for his work with Rush. The sessions also featured guest appearances from prominent Canadian musicians including Rick Santers (Santers, Lee Aaron) and Gil Moore (Triumph), further strengthening the album’s ties to the national rock scene.

Musically, the record delivered ten tightly produced tracks including ‘White Heat’, ‘Crazy For You’, ‘Rollin' With The Thunder’, and ‘Paranoia’, combining soaring vocal melodies, polished studio production, and arena-ready guitar arrangements typical of late-1980s Canadian rock.

Despite strong production values and major-label backing, White Heat’s momentum proved short-lived. The band did not release a follow-up album, and by the early 1990s the project had quietly dissolved as musical trends shifted away from AOR toward alternative rock.

Although their recorded output was limited to a single album, White Heat remain a notable example of the late-1980s prairie rock movement, linking the Saskatchewan new-wave scene of Hypno-Gogo with the polished commercial rock sound emerging from Winnipeg during the final years of the decade.
