In 1980 Craig Ruhnke told RPM that his records had the same problem every easy-listening act in Canada had: "MOR gets airplay but no sales." He had produced all of his own records since 1974. Michael Godin had just brought him back to Irving/Almo, A&M's publishing arm, and when he heard Ruhnke's new songs he told him, "I love the songs but you're not producing them right." Godin took him into Manta Sound in Toronto with Barry Keane on drums, Tom Szczesniak on bass and Bob Mann on guitar. 'You're a Heartbreaker' was the first single from that session, and Ruhnke was sure of it: "It's definitely top 40." It reached No. 10 on RPM's Adult Oriented Playlist in September 1980. 'Heartache', recorded at the same session, followed as the next A&M single.
Ruhnke produced the B-side himself. The year before, Irving/Almo had pressed The Craig Ruhnke Band, an LP only for radio stations so programmers could hear his writing, and 'You and I' was the first song on it. Toronto's CKEY played the B-side as well. It added 'You and I' to its Canadian content playlist in July 1980 and was still playing it in September, while the A-side was climbing the RPM chart.
'You and I' opened side two of Reach Out in 1981. The A-side appeared as 'Heartbreaker' on Just Like the Old Times in 1982 and on The Craig Ruhnke Collection Volume 1 in 1991.
