Formed in Québec in 1958 by childhood friends Guy Lapointe and Raymond Bourque, this harmony-driven duo began as The Rythm Masters before adopting the French moniker Les Rythmos in 1959. Inspired by the Everly Brothers and Elvis Presley, they stood apart from the novelty acts of the day with a repertoire rooted in North American rock ‘n’ roll and heartfelt ballads. Their early success led to high-profile performances at Montréal's Cabaret Mocambo and the Théâtre National, and a string of hits on the Fleur-de-Lys and Dis-Q-Ton labels, including Frisette, Petite Nancy, Si t’es tanné, and the enduring fan favourite Candy. The latter, released in 1967, was a tribute to go-go dancer Candy Greene, a pop culture icon from Jeunesse d’aujourd’hui. Briefly known as Jay et Ray, the duo captured the spirit of early Quebec youth culture before disbanding in the mid-1960s, leaving behind a charming and nostalgic catalog that helped define the province’s pre-yé-yé pop era.
