Information/Write-up
Released in May 1971, this was the first single pulled from the You're My People LP and marked the band’s transition into their most stable and recognizable lineup. Both tracks were recorded at RCA’s Toronto Studio under the direction of Jack Richardson. “Try” was co-written by Bob Quinn and Tim Garagan, while “How Many Times” was solely written by Quinn. The single showcases the full production values that would define the album, including horn and string arrangements by Keith Jollimore.
The single was also released in France in September 1971 on Capitol Records – 2C 006-80908 M, making it one of only two Pepper Tree singles to receive international distribution.

“One of the most successful group sounds to be launched from Canada's Atlantic Provinces, Pepper Tree, are ready to move into the disc scene once again. This time, according to Roly Legault, national promo chief for Capitol, ‘They’re coming on strong; they’re hot. We believe very strongly that they’re headed for the top.’”
“Their new single, ‘Try,’ was co-written by group members Bob Quinn (organist) and Tim Garagon (drummer) and was produced by Jack Richardson at RCA's Toronto studios.”
“‘Try’ introduces a new group. Besides those mentioned, Jim White plays lead guitar and the bass player is Chris Brockway. ‘Pepper Tree,’ notes Legault, is ‘a completely reorganized, re-inspired and revitalized group.’”
“Ritchie Yorke had occasion to sit in on the group’s album session and found that ‘observers who were fortunate enough to attend any of the sessions were literally flabbergasted and taken aback with the group’s originality and innovative new sound.’”
